How to transition an oversized t-shirt dress to fall

Hello, it’s me Bad to the Blonde. An oversized t-shirt has the versatility to wear not only from day to night – but as a dress to transition your style staples from season to season. The band tee has replaced the white t-shirt as a wardrobe staple and here is how to wear it this fall.

Layer with a denim jacket

A “completer piece” in fashion is a silhouette that is layered to complete the outfit. A light jacket not only adds warmth in cold weather but creates dimension over the t-shirt dress for a visually appealing look. (I am a freeze baby – are you always cold, too?) The blue jean jacket is trending in an oversized fit, studded and embellished, distressed and dark washes, and in cropped and trench coat lengths. Just like my moto jacket collection where you’ll see a variety of colors, no two denim jackets in my closet are alike. One jacket of every style has to have a little bling!

To pull it off, pair a light wash denim jacket that will transition over the white bolt band tee. You want to pick a wash that coordinates with the color tee. For example, I would wear a black t-shirt outfit with a black distressed denim jacket to look rock-n-roll and not western.

Coordinate color but remember opposites attract

To keep it rocking from head to toe you need to coordinate the same color boots with the shirt but accessories in the opposite color. Your sunglasses and purse should match just like your t-shirt and shoes. Pair pieces of the same color like a pro and your outfit will maintain an appealing balance. (That’s the libra in me talking…) Every piece of this outfit is trendy, but trending, in neutral colors if you’re into minimalist style. I love how opposites attract – but just in fashion and not relationships!

As the colors change like the seasons your outfit should, too! The black accessories match the graphic on the band tee and pull that darker, moody feeling into fall. A band tee usually has a geometric design so choose accessories that have opposite shapes. Pull styles that were trending from different decades and you’ll continue the musical message without losing the vibe. Large, round black sunglasses are a new, modern trend whereas white square sunglasses would date me as a 1960s Rolling Stones groupie.

It’s still band tee season but transition with a different vibe

To sum it up from last season, let’s just say punk goes country but the vintage band t-shirt is still the must-have trend. To wear it now, the combat boot has been replaced with the cowboy and the belt bag is being swapped with the backpack. This outfit combo is unexpected and “concert cool” and a little Coachella.

After the show it’s the after party then

After the party it’s the hotel lobby

I love how tall white cowboy boots can look rugged and modern, while the backpack purse is sporty and functional. The silhouettes are all on the completely different sides of fashion but what brings it together is the wearability of the band tee decade after decade. A vintage band t-shirt is to a denim jacket, like a cowboy boot is to a backpack purse.

Every rockstar steps out in sunglasses. Thanks Araya Photography for being my paparazzi.
